National Spring Clean is keeping Scotland beautiful

National Spring Clean takes place throughout Scotland during April every year, and this years' event is going to be massive. The initiative - organised brilliantly by our campaign partner Keep Scotland Beautiful - runs from 1st April - 31st May 2012.

Every year people get together and help pick up litter from their neighbourhood. It's a time of year when Scots traditionally give their homes a clean sweep and start spending more time outdoors again after a long winter.

National Spring Clean was re-launched in its current guise in April 2007 after a six year break, and has grown from strength to strength each year (see chart below).

National Spring Clean provides an annual focus and opportunity for schools, youth clubs, environmental organisations, voluntary groups, community gatherings and businesses, to play an important part in a bigger, co-ordinated campaign.

In 2011, using litter pickers and gloved hands, each person collected on average one and a half black bags of waste - that's equivalent to 90 double decker buses or enough to fill 145,855 street litter bins.

Well done Keep Scotland Beautiful!
